Drop The (fat) Bomb!

Fat Bomb

Of all the things I’ve yelled and all the threats I have made over the years, I can honestly say I never thought I would be chasing my son through the house while screaming “Drop that fat bomb!” Making the scene even more dramatic was the phrase itself. To me, the bomb in question was my Keto friendly package of pure snack joy. To my overly imaginative child, however, it now became a large explosive that needed to be dealt with. Down the hall he ran and taking the stairs two at a time, he courageously flung open the front door and threw my bomb as far as his little arms could muster. With his back against the wall, he closed his eyes and covered his ears, waiting for the explosion. Note to self: more Bubble Guppies, less Rambo.

What is a fat bomb?

Developed initially for the Keto Diet, fat bombs are high energy snacks made out of good fats, a few carbs for taste, and occasionally a dash of protein and or MCT oil. When counting macronutrients these snacks are, well, the bomb!  Some dieters consume fat bombs as a pre-workout stimulant while others use fat bombs as a way to curb sweet cravings.

How Do Fat Bombs Aid My Diet?

Since Keto consists of a diet high in fat, low in carbs, and moderate proteins at a macronutrient ratio of: 75% fat,15-20% protein, 5-10% carbs, fat bombs can help you reach your fat calories quicker. Additionally, when you are first getting started in the diet your blood glucose will be all over the map. In order to avoid some of the Keto fallout, and to give yourself a better chance of success, these treats help exponentially.

What the “naysayers” claim

There are some people who adhere to a strict way of doing Keto and to them, if you are craving sweets, then you are not in ketosis in the first place. As a rule, ketosis is achieved from the deprivation of exogenous glucose that encourages your body to burn its own stored fat for energy. With that in mind, if you have a sweet attack then you have not reached Ketosis yet and if you are there, you will kick yourself out with the added sweeteners from the fat bombs.

My personal experience

I have tried every diet and lifestyle pattern under the sun, and what I have learned is this: unless you are incredibly disciplined, your brain has a mind of its own. In the same way that you can find yourself with a cup of coffee in hand while you still have one eye closed, your brain will forever try to find short cuts and automate as many processes as possible. It does this to free up space for more important things like learning new subjects or reading the 157 status updates on Facebook before you leave for work.

Eat, Repeat

Your brain likes patterns and repetition, so if you have a cup of coffee every morning around 7 and a donut around nine followed by a snack cake at noon eventually your brain will set the habit on autopilot and you will start to do the task or have a craving without your conscience mind paying attention. That is how people gain weight in the first place; how it seems like you wake up one day and you are 50 pounds overweight…it happened while your conscience mind was “sleeping.”

Get a Grip!

Once you grasp this realization, then you must commit yourself to reprogramming the software in your head to new habits, likes, etc. If this is your first time in a weight loss program, or if you are carb and sugar dependent like I was, the chances of you succeeding by cutting out everything you have eaten for the last 10 + years is slim. Therefore, I say if eating a fat bomb eases your cravings and helps transition to a heathier lifestyle then by God, go for it!

Honey, I love you

I once went through a phase where every time the need for something sweet would arise I would eat globs of honey…might not be what the experts recommend but it kept me form eating a gallon of Mocha Double Chocolate Overload ice cream so I consider it a win. DO NOT let anyone shame you into feeling like you aren’t doing a lifestyle change correctly based off their ratios or norms, simply listen to your body. Self-awareness is half the battle and if your body screams “I need a snack to handle all this celery” then give in occasionally…just with better food choices.

Homemade or prepackaged?

As always, I prefer to recommend making homemade Fat Bombs that way you can control the ingredients and the ratios, size of the ball, and so forth. If you are not Susie Homemaker or do not have the time, click the links below for a few of my favorite store-bought options. Also, I am including two recipes here, but a quick search online will give you limitless options as well. Happy Bombing!
