When people hear the phrase “essential oils” many times the first thoughts that come to mind are images of a seedy massage parlor or some strange ritual from the 1960’s. Although essential oils can be used for these purposes, they have practical uses as well. When it comes to alternative medicine and holistic healing, oils ARE essential.

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts. The oils retain their natural smells and flavor when the chemical compounds are strained from the plant. In their organic form these leaves, plants, and stems are extremely concentrated and highly effective. Although plant oils have become popular in recent years, the use of essential oils has been around since at least 4500 BC. Ancient Egyptians used mixtures of different herbs to make medicines, perfumes, and aromatic blends for religious ceremonies. Throughout the many centuries since, the use of essential oils has been documented in every culture the world over.

How to use essential oils

The most common way to enjoy essential oils is to inhale them. To safely inhale oils simply mix the oils with water in a diffuser or humidifier. You can also mix oils with a carrier oil such as jojoba, almond or grapeseed for use in skincare products, and if you want to get creative, try using coconut oil to make face masks and conditioners. The medicine cabinet is another place to find oils. Oils can be used to treat headaches, toothaches, and other common ailments such as colds and digestive disorders.

Which oils should I start with?

Which oils you choose really is a matter of personal preference as you must take in consideration which scents you like, and for which purpose your oils will be used. However, the most common essential oils used for most recipes are:

  • Tea Tree – antibacterial properties for fungus, acne
  • Eucalyptus – medicinal uses for nasal congestion, asthma
  • Peppermint – good for digestion and stomach upset
  • Lavender – soothing essences to promote peaceful sleep
  • Lemongrass – uplifting for anxiety and depression
  • Rosemary – liver detoxifier and helps relieve bloat
